1. Optimize Your Boards for Topics

Of course, my main Pinterest Strategy is optimizing for Pinterest SEO and I’m sure you already know how to optimize your boards for Pinterest SEO, using keywords that people are searching for.

But, did you know that Pinterest allows you to follow topics? As well as following People and Boards users can also follow topics.

Pinterest Hack #1 Pinterest Topics 'Hair

Why does this matter you ask? I touched on this tip a little in my Pinterest Traffic guide but I’m going to show you exactly how I used topics to increase my reach & traffic.

Topics are basically search phrases.

So these are things people type in and are interested enough in to follow.

I found that using sub-topics to name and optimize my boards as well as my other keywords nearly doubled my reach.

So my first Pinterest hack is to name your boards after topics & keywords, if you do, your boards have a high chance of showing up when people search for use keywords or phase and with that, all your content.

BUT also your pins will show up on the topic’s feed and the user’s homepage if the follow that topic.

Topics are also great to research new keywords, check out the related section to see what topics are trending and create new content based on what you find.

Start with a category and narrow it down to your topics or niche >>>https://www.pinterest.co.uk/categories/

2 Create Viral Boards

Yes, boards not pins. (well also pins but thats not the point here)

Like I mentioned in the point above you want your boards to show up when people search for their keyword.

Pinterest Tip: Create Boards That Rank In Search Suggestion

Instead of just having one pin show up for a particular keyword, you have your whole board show up.

So ranking our board as I mentioned above is really important to drive people to your board but you also need people to engage with your board.

This Pinterest Hack is all about making your board a hotspot for that topic.

If more people engage with the content from your boards, Pinterest will rank your board higher and show it to more people.

And for that you need to create a board thats valuable to the user.

Let’s say you have a board called ‘how to paid a bed’ (I actually searched this recently after getting inspired on Pinterest to paint my bed white).

Make sure that someone can find ALL the information in your board.

It is vital that you pin other people’s content. (For a few reasons) Just make sure it is great content.

Of course, you want to pin good looking pins also make sure the article is helpful and the link is working.

Pinning others peoples stuff will help you drive more traffic to your board and make your board more valuable.

I found that boards with pins only linking to one domain don’t do as well as board linking to multiple quality domains.

It also helps in adding a variety of content. Pins that link to article, videos, products etc.

So going back to my example, if we were to create a board around ‘how to paint a bed’, I would make sure to add pins that link to my blog posts but also add pins that link to some youtube tutorials.

I would also add in links to product reviews and products (yes, you can link directly to affiliate links on Pinterest).

3. Use Analytics To Create Viral Pins

Usually, research is number one on my list and the only reason its not today is that you need to pin for a while before you can use this.

This is the other reason why it is super important to pin other peoples stuff.

Not only does it help you drive traffic, find new content & network, it’s super super important for your research.

When you pin other peoples pins you see the analytics for those pins too.

When I first started out I used to completely disregard other peoples pins when I looked at my analytics. Huge Mistake!

Here you can see what types of pins are doing well, which topics get the most repins? What type of colors drive the most clicks and what type of headlines convert.

The Analytics feature has sooooo much potential and I strongly encourage you to spend some quality time analyzing it.

Once you know what works in your niche simple go ahead a create the content and pins.

4. Use A Popping Headline

Your headline is what decides if someone clicks on your link or keeps scrolling. Its a simple as that.

So I strongly encourage you to spend some time crafting them.

Write at least 10 different headlines for each post and create a few different pins to test.

5. Hide Pins In Your Posts

I mentioned hiding Pins in your posts quite briefly in my Traffic from Pinterest tutorial but here am going to explain exactly how hiding point in your blog post will help you get more traffic.

So of course, you can start hiding random pins and images in your posts. That’s going to do absolutely nothing for your traffic,

But if you hide relevant pins, with relevant keyword and alt descriptions it can.

The idea here is that you create multiple pins for each post with different headlines.

(They need to still be relevant, never lie to people or use click bait, once someone feels tricked their brain will automatically discard your content)

Hide some of this pins in your post

How to hide Pins in your Post

To hide pins in your post simply switch to HTML view and add the code below.

Add this piece of code before your image code:

<div style = “display:none;”>

Add this after you image code:

</div>

It should look like this:

Make sure to use the straight ” and not the curved version.

When someone goes to pin a pin from your website, they will see all the images on this page, even the hidden once.

But there is more! A lot more.

And its all in the alt descriptions.

When you hide your pins in your post you are also adding the keywords you have added to the alt description.

So not only are we adding more keywords (these can be related keywords/phrases) to our post but hiding images also gives your users the option to choose an image to pin.

7. Listen To Pinterest

Guess who know the most about Pinterest trends and alogorithem?

Of course, Pinterest themselves.

So my next Pinterest Tip is understanding Pinterest.

If you are running a blog to make money, you are essentially running a business and part of that is understanding your key stakeholder.

And that includes your social media platforms.

Stay up to date, by following Pinterest on Pinterest and other social media platforms and reading up on their blog.

Its important you understand their objectives and priorities as a business, so you can aline your social media stratigy.

6. Don’t Fight the Pinterest Algorithm

Guess what? If you fight the Algorithm you are fighting a loosing battle.

This ties in with my point above, make sure you understand your platform and their objectives. Understand why their algorithm works the way it does.

This hack isn’t solely for Pinterest and I strongly encourage anyone to apply it to any social media platform you are using for your business.

For example, you might have noticed that group boards are not driving as much traffic as they used to, and you might have even heard people saying group boards are dead…..and it is true.

If your entire Pinterest Strategy is based on group boards you’ll likely see a drop in traffic.

The reason groupboards are not doing as well as they used to is that using groupboards to drive traffic as many have been doing, isnt really what Pinterest had in mind.

Their idea of group boards is much smaller, think of a collaboration and friends sharing ideas like ‘Recipes for a summer bbq’ or ‘Vegan Recipes For A Kids Party’ and not thousands of marketers ‘abusing‘ the system by pinning multiple times a day.

So Are Group Boards Really Dead?

No. You just have to work with the algorithm instead of fighting it.

If you are just starting out with a completely new profile it is still very beneficial to join as many group board as possible.

But once you have pinned for a while and gained a bit of traffic you want to use your analytics to filter out the group boards that are actually worth pinning to so you don’t waste your time.

Using Pinterest Group boards in 2019

If you already an established Pinner, you want to be very selective with the boards that you join.

  1. Only join Groups with a large following and low contributor and pin count.
  2. Only join groups that are relevant to your niche.
  3. Don’t use group boards as your only Pinterest Strategy.
